What It Is

What Is a FIPS-Certified USB Token?

A FIPS-certified USB token is a small hardware device that stores your Digital Signature Certificate's private key inside a secure, tamper-resistant chip instead of on your computer's hard drive. "FIPS 140-2" is a US federal cryptography standard that Indian Certifying Authorities also rely on to decide which tokens are safe to hold a Class 3 DSC — so any token you use for signing government or business documents needs this certification.

The private key never leaves the chip. When you sign a document, log in to a portal, or file a return, the token performs the cryptographic operation internally and only sends back the result — which is what keeps your DSC safe even if the computer you're using is compromised.

Since July 2018, the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) has made a FIPS-certified crypto token mandatory for every new DSC issued in India, regardless of which Certifying Authority signs it.

Why It Matters

Why Your DSC Needs a FIPS Token

A few reasons a certified hardware token isn't optional for a valid Class 3 signature.

🛡️

Mandatory Under CCA Rules

Certifying Authorities in India will only issue a DSC onto a token that carries valid FIPS 140-2 certification.

🔑

Private Key Never Leaves the Chip

Signing happens on-board the token, so the private key can't be copied, extracted, or exposed to malware.

Accepted Everywhere

Works across GST, MCA21, Income Tax e-filing, ICEGate, GeM, and every major eTendering portal.

🧷

Tamper-Resistant Hardware

The token's casing and chip are built to resist physical tampering, protecting against key extraction attempts.

🔌

No Software to Install

Plug-and-play drivers mean you're signing within minutes on a new computer, without manual setup.

♻️

Reusable Across Renewals

A working token can usually be reused when you renew your DSC — you don't need to buy a new one every cycle.

FAQ

USB Token, Answered

Is a FIPS-certified token mandatory for my DSC?
Yes. Since July 2018, the Controller of Certifying Authorities requires every Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate to be issued onto a FIPS 140-2 certified USB token — a plain USB drive or software-only certificate is not permitted.
Can I reuse my existing token when I renew my DSC?
In most cases, yes — if your current token is working and still under warranty, your renewed certificate can be loaded onto it, so you only need to buy a new one if yours is lost, damaged, or full.
Do I need to install any software to use the token?
No separate CD or manual driver installation is required on supported Windows, macOS, and Linux versions — the token is plug-and-play.
What happens if I forget my token PIN?
You can reset it using the PUK code provided with your token. Entering the wrong PIN too many times can permanently lock the token, so store your PUK safely.
Can one token hold more than one certificate?
A single token can typically store both a Signature and an Encryption certificate for a Combo DGFT DSC, but each token is issued to one individual applicant only.
Is the token price included in the DSC price?
No, the certificate price on our pricing page covers issuance only. The token is a separate one-time cost of ₹599, unless you already have a compatible token.
